2023 1 oz FINE SILVER 999
Great Eastern
Description:
The obverse presents a dramatic bow fully colored depiction of view of SS Great Eastern, an iron-hulled steamship cutting through the ocean, displaying her five funnels, towering masts, large side paddle wheels, rigging, fluttering flag, rows of portholes, lifeboats, and finely engraved deck details, while sculpted dark below waves beneath the hull create a dramatic sense of movement against the golden compass golden rose at the upper left, surrounded by a map grid and navigational details in the background. A ribbon inscription reads “Great Eastern,” and an inset medallion features a fully colored depiction Sea nautical navigation instruments "sextant, , divider, sailor compass, metal spyglass" all within a circle surrounded by the text identifying the series "Nautical Ounce" left while the metal, weight and purity accompanied by the date "2023 1oz FINE SILVER 999" along the right edge.
The “Great Eastern” gained real significance with the laying of the first functioning transatlantic cable (1866). This made it possible for the first time to exchange telegrams between America and Europe in real time using Morse code.
