Description:
The design on the reverse gilded in 24 carat gold honors the first Australians to explore the Antarctic continent on Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod expedition "became the first to reach the vicinity of the South Magnetic Pole", Douglas Mawson, Tannat Edgeworth David and Forbes Mackay. The three explorers are standing next to a British flag with a map of Antarctica in the background showing the locations of the bases at Mawson, Davis and Casey. The inscriptions include “Australian Antarctic Territory” around above and "INTERNATIONAL POLAR YEAR 2007 - 2008" around below. The designer's initials (WP) appears below, on the ground.
