The reverse side of the coin features wildlife encountered in the Antarctic and the Australian Antarctic Territory, with a depiction of a colony of penguins. The a richly colored elegant Emperor Penguin and its chick with lifelike orange, gold, white and black, are shown lining up at the edge of an ice shelf near open water as some watch on while others gliding under clear blue water, surrounded by Antarctic seascapes, with icebergs and cliffs in the background — symbolizing the fragile yet majestic ecosystem of the Southern Ocean. The upper edge of the coin features the inscription "EMPEROR PENGUIN", as well as the weight and the fineness "1 oz .999 SILVER" near the rim below, the initials of the designer (AWB).
