The reverse design of the coin depicts the whale shark swimming in the blue ocean waters accompanied by remora fishes which provide a habitat for them, the fish is depicted in the silver hue of the platinum coin itself. An inscription indicating the theme "DISCOVER AUSTRALIA" is shown along the upper edge with its name accompanied by weight, purity, and metal content "WHALE SHARK," "2012," "9995 PLATINUM." In the right field, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark appears and the designer's initials (TV) are also incorporated into the design are on the shark's pelvic fin.
