The 2008 Rwanda 500 Francs “Basketball” niobium coin from the Beijing Olympics series celebrates competitive basketball and the energy of international sport. Its vivid pink niobium surface gives the issue a distinctive modern appearance. The obverse presents a dynamic game beneath a basketball hoop and net, reinforcing the sporting context: two players crowd the court, one of them driving toward the basket holding the ball high, while the other defender stretches his arm upward, uniforms, shorts, socks and detailed basketball shoes emphasize the sporting theme. The players set against the map of New world "North and South America" in the background , clearly outlining the Olympic Basketball Champions "USA".
