Description:
The reverse of the coin depicts two prospectors outside their tent with a resting camel. Camels were imported to Australia by Afghan immigrants. The design is inspired by the many camps that sprang up during the 19th-century gold rush in areas such as Bendigo in Victoria and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia to house thousands of hopeful prospectors. Above the image, the words “THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET 1/25 OZ. 9999 GOLD” curve around the top edge, while below the design, the year “2003.” The layout is clean and the engraving crisp, highlighting the artistic capabilities of the Perth Mint’s master engravers.
