The reverse of the coin features the moment a humpback whale rises from the ocean surface in a full breach with a stylized wave background. Humpback whales undertake some of the longest migrations of any mammal, traveling thousands of miles between their feeding grounds in polar waters and breeding areas in tropical seas. Engravings on this face of the coin identify the name of the coin "HUMPBACK WHALE" around above and the year of issue, weight, purity, and metal content "2023 1/4 OZ 9999 GOLD" are inscribed close to the bottom rim. In the right field, The Perth Mint's traditional "P" mint mark appears and the designers initials “WR" appearing just under.
