The obverse features a right-facing portrait of King Moshoeshoe II wearing traditional attire, an ornate patterned headband with feather, braided hair and a neck ornament, surrounded by the inscription Lesotho Independence in "Sesotho" and English and his name below the image.

Description:
The obverse presents the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Lesotho, pictured is King Moshoeshoe II sitting on a Basotho shield. Behind the shield there are two crossed weapons, an assegai (lance) and a knobkierie (club). To the left and right of the shield are supporters of the shield, two Basotho horses. In the foreground there is a ribbon with the national motto of Lesotho: Khotso, Pula, Nala (Sesotho, to English: Peace, Rain, Prosperity). The koena (crocodile) below the shield is the symbol of the dynasty of Lesotho's largest ethnicity, the Bakoena. The face value flanked by stars below the coat of arms.
