MAURITIUS INDEPENDENCE
· 10 RUPEES ·
Description:
Dodo, once upon a time found only on Mauritius, now found nowhere. This huge flightless bird stood one metre tall and weighed up to 20 kg. It lived on fruit and made its nest on the ground. Due to its isolation and lack of predators, the Dodo had no fear of people and was an easy target once humans came to the island. The Dodo was completely wiped out before the end of the 17th century. That's just over 100 years after they were first discovered by humans.
