The reverse shows a finely detailed image of the Thylacoleo ("pouch lion") often known as marsupial lions, the largest and last members of the family Thylacoleonidae, occupying the position of apex predator within Australian ecosystems against a vivid colored background of view of the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites (Riversleigh), Queensland. The inscriptions include AUSTRALIA $1, AUSTRALIAN FOSSIL MAMMAL SITES. In the left field, the Perth Mint “P” mintmark and the designer's initials (RV) appears discreetly at the opposite on the Thylacoleo's tail.
