The coin’s reverse features Governor Macquarie's portrait surrounded by inscription "LACHLAN MACQUARIE GOVERNOR OF NSW" above and accompanied by images of the ‘Rum’ Hospital, a five-shilling holey dollar and a 15 pence dump. These were Australia's first coinage made from Spanish silver dollars. The a backdrop incorporates a representation of words in an 1817 dispatch in which Macquarie urged Britain to formally adopt the name ‘Australia’ and symbolizing his contributions to the colony's development, including architectural achievements and social reforms. In the right field , the Perth Mint “P” mintmark and the designer's initials (RV) above it on the ‘Rum’ Hospital.
