The reverse side of the coin features wildlife encountered in the Antarctic and the Australian Antarctic Territory, with a depiction of a colony of penguins. The Emperor Penguin and its chick are shown lining up at the edge of an ice shelf near open water as some watch on while others dive in and swim beneath the frigid waters. The upper edge of the coin features the inscription "EMPEROR PENGUIN", as well as the weight and the fineness "1 oz .999 SILVER" near the rim below, the initials of the designer (AWB).
