The reverse shows a finely detailed image of macaroni penguin and her chick, one of several species of this flightless bird that breed there against a vivid colored background of view of the the rugged landscape of Heard Island, including Mount Mawson volcano and the Big Ben Massif, the design includes a number of crested macaroni penguins. The inscriptions include AUSTRALIA $1, GREATER BLUE MOUNTAINS. In the right field, the Perth Mint “P” mintmark and the designer's initials (RV) appears discreetly below on the right penguin's leg.
